"My failures have been errors in judgment, not of intent."
Ulysses S. Grant

Born: April 27, 1822, Point Pleasant, Ohio

Died: July 23, 1885, Mount McGregor, New York

Term: 18th President of the United States (1869-1877) he served two terms as president

Political Party: Republican

Vice President: During Grant's first term, Schuyler Colfax was Grant's Vice-President. During Grant's second term, Henry Wilson, served for two years until his death in 1875 and was not replaced leaving the Vice-Presidency vacant for two years.

Rating: General Grant the union's greatest General and was the General who commanded the great victory at Vicksburg during the civil war. Though his accomplishments during the civil war were great his presidency left much to be desired. Grant deserves a C as a president for he did have many accomplishments such as the enforcement of Civil Rights to African Americans, the Treaty of Washington in 1871, and the Resumption of Specie Act in 1875. His biggest problem though was his choice in associates instead of going to the Republicans for their advice. He chose people he thought he could trust and to whom he could delegate responsibility. This strategy led to some good cabinet appointments but also to a number of dubious ones. His loyalty led to him not removing officials that were either corrupt or just not good at there job. Also During his presidency many corruption scandals broke out such as the Credit Mobiler's sceme.

Goals: He supported amnesty for former Confederates and signed the Amnesty Act of 1872 to further this. He favored a limited number of troops to be stationed in the South—sufficient numbers to protect Southern African Americans. Grant was a big supporter African Americans nd native Indian tribes. Grant's 1868 campaign slogan, "Let us have peace," defined his motivation and assured his success. As president for two terms, Grant made many advances in both civil and human rights. He won passage of the Fifteenth Amendment, which gave the freedman the right to vote.

Congress: Grant's Relationship with congress was good as he passed many laws regarding African American Civil rights such as Civil Rights Act of 1875, which entitled equal treatment in public accommodations and jury selection. It helps though when you have the majority rule in the House of Represenatives and the Senate. During the Reconstruction Era including Presidents Johnson's Term Congress was controlled by the Republican Party the main difference between Johnson's term and Grant's is the simple fact that Johnson vetoed many of the bills that where attempted to be passed by congress while Grant, being a fellow Republican, passed mostly all without so much as a second glance. He also won passage of the fifteenth Amendment.

Decision: Grants most lasting decision or it should be called accomplishment was definetly when he won passage of the Fifteenth Ademendment which gave the freedman the vote, and the Ku Klux Klan Act, which empowered the president "to arrest and break up disguised night marauders." He pressed for the former slaves to be "possessed of the civil rights which citizenship should carry with it." His backing of this Admendment captured him many African American Votes in the second Presidential Election he ran in. The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, establishing voting rights, was ratified in 1870. Grants push for Freedom to all was his greatest acheivement of a Presidency unfortunatly marked by many bad scandals and corruption of the government.

Effect: Grants biggest effect on future Presidency's comes in the passing of the Fifteenth Admendment which is, of course, still in the Constitution today. Since his terms where scared by corruption many people believe his presidency was, not worthless, but unnecessary and the republican's choice in who to put in office was made in to much haste. Many Bad things can be said about Grant as a president, but as a leader and a General Grant was the Union's 2nd in command until the assasination of President Lincoln which made him the person with the most popularity power amoung the people. Grant did have an effect on Future Presidency's not only through the Admendment but in his attempt of Resconstruction after the Civil War. Though Grant's Greatest Achievements where scared by corruption he was not a failure as a president and deserves the average rating of C because of his great acts.
